## Where the lowest fee crypto exchange stops being cheap

Ordered by the median value of orders resting within 10 basis points of the BTC mid price, deepest first.

Weights: Published rate 40 · Execution cost 30 · Where the money sits 12 · Security record 8 · What the rate buys 6 · Who may pay it 4, on a scale of zero to 50, fixed 22 September 2026 before any venue was priced. Method in full: https://thundermessage.com/how-we-price

Rates are the entry tier, read 18 September 2026. The fee column is twice the taker rate on a $10,000 position; the book column is what the order-book readings show that order paying past the mid price, in and out; all-in is the two added. Every venue here restricts access by jurisdiction; the list is in each one's own terms.

## The verdict

Once an order is large enough to clear the top of the book, the lowest fee crypto exchange is rarely the
cheapest one. Ordered by measured BTC depth on 24 September 2026, edgeX leads with $29.2 million resting
within 10 basis points, and a $100,000 order there walked 0.02 bps past the mid price.

## Notes on this sheet

1. Depth on this page spans from $29.2 million down to $870.00, a range of more than four orders of magnitude.
2. A $100,000 order walked 0.02 bps on the deepest book and 157.79 bps on the thinnest.
3. Paradex charges nothing and is the dearest venue here once the order reaches $100,000.
4. The two deepest books belong to venues charging 0.045%, not to the ones charging nothing.
5. A deep book shortens the walk, not the risk: the margin behind a leveraged position can still be taken in full.

## The surcharge behind the rate

Each BTC perpetual book on this page was read 00:00 to 23:54 UTC on 21 September 2026, at ten-minute stops; the figures are medians of every successful reading.

| Venue | Median spread | Resting within 10 bps | Walk on $10,000 | Walk on $100,000 | Readings |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| edgeX | 0.04 bps | $29.2 million | 0.02 bps | 0.02 bps | 134 |
| EVEDEX | 4.12 bps | $18.3 million | 2.06 bps | 2.06 bps | 133 |
| Lighter | 0.01 bps | $16.2 million | 0.43 bps | 0.71 bps | 52 |
| Aster | 0.01 bps | $14.9 million | 0.08 bps | 0.34 bps | 135 |
| Extended | 0.12 bps | $7.8 million | 0.06 bps | 0.06 bps | 53 |
| Hyperliquid | 0.12 bps | $7.3 million | 0.06 bps | 0.06 bps | 135 |
| Paradex | 7.45 bps | $870.00 | 95.76 bps | 157.79 bps | 133 |

## Line 1. [edgeX](https://pro.edgex.exchange) — $9.04 all-in on $10,000, for the deepest BTC book on the sheet

$29.2 million resting within 10 basis points, a 0.04 bps median spread and
0.02 bps of walk on a $100,000 order, over 134 readings. The
published rate, 0.040% maker / 0.045% taker ([edgeX tier table](https://pro.edgex.exchange/en-US/vip), checked 18 September 2026), is the dearest
maker rate here, and what it buys is the smallest walk on this page at both sizes we priced.

- Buys: 0.02 bps of walk on a $100,000 order, the smallest on this page; Balances and trades settle on its own chain, with documented forced withdrawals.
- Not covered: 0.040% to makers, against 0.015% on two venues here and nothing on four; 172 perpetual markets, against 578 on the widest list here; Stock perpetuals reject market orders while the underlying market is closed.
- Not for: makers who post and wait.

## Line 2. EVEDEX — $13.12 all-in on $10,000, for a deep book behind an unchanging rate

The readings put $18.3 million within 10 basis points and 2.06 bps of
walk on a $100,000 order, on a 4.12 bps median spread. The published rate is
0.015% maker / 0.045% taker and does not move with volume (EVEDEX documentation, noted 18 September 2026); cashback returns
up to 35% of a trader's own fees after they are paid.

- Buys: Second deepest book on this page at $18.3 million; 2.06 bps of walk on a $10,000 order.
- Not covered: The rate itself never falls, whatever the size of the account; 52 perpetual markets, so a large order in a smaller name has fewer places to go; Position data reaches Arbitrum in batches rather than trade by trade.
- Not for: traders who need hundreds of markets at this depth.

## Line 3. [Lighter](https://lighter.xyz) — $0.86 all-in on $10,000, for size on a book that costs nothing to cross

$16.2 million within 10 basis points and 0.71 bps of walk on $100,000,
with no fee at all on the Standard account
([Lighter fee documentation](https://docs.lighter.xyz/trading/trading-fees), checked 18 September 2026). The $10,000 walk,
0.43 bps, was wider than four of the books here managed, which is where the free
rate earns its keep.

- Buys: Deep book and no published fee on the default account; Forced exits through a priority queue on Ethereum are documented.
- Not covered: Free taker orders wait 300 milliseconds, which matters most on large orders; 0.43 bps of walk on $10,000, more than four venues here.
- Not for: orders that must be filled immediately.

## Line 4. [Aster](https://www.asterdex.com) — $8.16 all-in on $10,000, for the tightest quote on the page

A 0.01 bps median spread, level with Lighter as the narrowest on this sheet, with $14.9 million within 10 basis
points and 0.34 bps on a $100,000 order. Makers pay nothing and VIP 1 takers pay
0.040% ([Aster fee documentation](https://docs.asterdex.com/trading/perpetuals/fees-and-specs/fees), checked 18 September 2026).

- Buys: 0.01 bps median spread, tied with Lighter for the tightest quote here; Makers pay nothing at every tier.
- Not covered: 0.040% for takers, dearer than every venue here but the three on 0.045%; Chain code and bridge validators are closed to inspection.
- Not for: takers who trade at market all day.

## Line 5. [Extended](https://extended.exchange/) — $5.12 all-in on $10,000, for flat pricing on a thinner book

$7.8 million within 10 basis points, well below the venues above, though the walk stayed
small at 0.06 bps on $100,000. The rate is 0% maker / 0.025% taker for everyone
([Extended fee documentation](https://docs.extended.exchange/extended-resources/trading/trading-fees-and-rebates), checked 18 September 2026).

- Buys: 0.06 bps of walk on $100,000 despite the thinner book; The same rate for every account and every order type.
- Not covered: $7.8 million within 10 basis points, about half what Aster held on the line above; 278 of its 325 markets are request-for-quote, with no public book at all.
- Not for: orders far beyond $100,000.

## Line 6. [Hyperliquid](https://hyperliquid.xyz) — $9.12 all-in on $10,000, for large orders that also need many markets

$7.3 million within 10 basis points and 0.06 bps on a $100,000
order, across 324 perpetual markets. The base rate is
0.015% maker / 0.045% taker and falls with 14-day weighted volume
([Hyperliquid fee documentation](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/trading/fees), checked 18 September 2026), which is the discount a large
account is most likely to reach.

- Buys: 324 perpetual markets under a single fee tier; A volume ladder that a large account actually descends.
- Not covered: The base rate is 0.045% until the volume arrives; Builder-deployed markets are not reviewed by the interface operator.
- Not for: occasional traders who will stay at the base rate.

## Line 7. [Paradex](https://www.paradex.trade) — $191.52 all-in on $10,000, for small orders only

$870.00 within 10 basis points was the thinnest book on this sheet, and a $100,000 market
order walked 157.79 bps. The rate is nothing on web orders
([Paradex fee documentation](https://api.prod.paradex.trade/v1/system/volume-tiers), checked 18 September 2026), which at this size is not the number
that matters.

- Buys: No fee on retail web orders; Audited bridge contracts and a Sherlock bounty of up to 500,000 USDC.
- Not covered: 157.79 bps of walk on a $100,000 order in the readings; 7.45 bps median spread, the widest here; Retail orders are capped at three a second.
- Not for: any order that has to be filled at market in one go.

## Reading the walk instead of the rate

A fee is a fixed share of the notional, so it scales with the order and never surprises anyone. The
walk does not behave that way. On this page a $10,000 market order cost between
0.02 bps and 95.76 bps in price impact; at $100,000 the same
order cost between 0.02 bps and 157.79 bps. The cheap end
barely moved and the thin end went up by more than half again.

That is why size decides which venue is cheap. A trader clipping $2,000 at a time will feel the rate
and nothing else. A trader moving $100,000 at market on Paradex pays more in price impact on that one
order than the published fee on any venue on this page would take from the same trade.

## FAQ

### Does order size change which exchange is cheapest?

Yes, and sharply. At $10,000 the published rate dominates and a venue charging nothing wins outright.
At $100,000 the book dominates instead: edgeX charged 0.02 bps and Paradex
157.79 bps in price impact, which is worth far more than either rate card says.

### What is slippage in crypto trading?

The difference between the price you see and the average price you get. A market order eats the resting
orders nearest the mid, then the next ones out. It is measured as the distance from the mid price to the
average fill, on $10,000 and $100,000 orders.

### How much liquidity does a perp DEX need?

Enough that your order is small next to it. The venues here held between $870.00 and
$29.2 million within 10 basis points of the BTC mid price. A $100,000 order is more than a
hundred times the first figure and a rounding error against the second.

### Is it better to use limit orders on a thin book?

Usually. A limit order does not walk the book and on four of these seven venues it also pays no maker
fee. The cost is uncertainty: the order may sit unfilled while the price moves, which is its own kind
of expense on a leveraged position.

### Which exchange has the deepest crypto order book?

Among the seven venues read here it was edgeX, at $29.2 million resting within 10 basis points
of the BTC mid price across 134 readings taken on 21 September 2026. EVEDEX came
second at $18.3 million and Lighter third at $16.2 million.

### Do I pay slippage on both sides of a trade?

If both sides are market orders, yes. That is why the all-in figures on this site double the walk: a
$10,000 position opened and closed at market pays the impact twice, which on Paradex came to $191.52
against $0.86 on Lighter.

### how do you size an order on a perp dex without moving the price?

Compare the order with what is resting near the mid. The measurements here cover $10,000 and $100,000;
the walk on the first was 0.06 bps or less on three venues, while the second cost
157.79 bps on the thinnest book on this sheet.

### Is reported volume a good proxy for liquidity?

Not reliably. Volume is what a venue reports; depth is what is actually resting in the book when your
order arrives. Paradex reported real volume on the day it was read and still held only
$870.00 within 10 basis points.

### What is the spread on a BTC perpetual?

On the books read here it ranged from 0.01 bps to 7.45 bps as a median over
the reading window. Spread is the first cost a market order meets, before it walks any further into the
book. A wide median and a deep book can sit together, so spread is read beside the walk.

### Does a deeper book mean lower fees?

No, and often the opposite. The two deepest books on this page belong to venues charging
0.045% to takers, while the thinnest belongs to one charging nothing. Depth is paid for
somewhere, usually by the traders who cross the spread.

## How this sheet was priced

Quoted off each venue's own pages, 18 September 2026: rates, market counts, sign-in rules, audits.
Read off the public book here: every BTC perpetual, 00:00 to 23:54 UTC on 21 September 2026, at ten-minute stops. The weights came
first, 22 September 2026, before any of the 7 venues was priced
([how we rate](/how-we-price)). No order was sent.

The price here leaves out volume tiers, staking, rebates and cashback. Funding is billed on its own
clock. One contract was timed: BTC. What a chain is told, and what the past 24 months hold, come from
the venue's telling, not from anything tested here.

One published formula, fixed before anything was priced. Every figure carries the day it was taken. Corrections: desk@thundermessage.com.
